The Chapel
2026
The Chapel transforms a forest path into a temporary temple composed of six freestanding Gothic-style stained-glass windows. Each window contains a mirror embedded within scenes of nature featuring an array of local winged insects. The leading patterns in the stained glass are derived from the vein structures of the insect’s wings, allowing entomology to serve as both metaphorical imagery and architecture.
The Chapel, reframes my ongoing insect metaphor within the visual language of a sacred space. By considering all living things in nature as sacred and acknowledging nature itself as the setting for all these miracles, the work encourages reflection on how the value of others is assigned based on differences in identity, belief, culture, origin, and perspective.
To foster a sense of shared value and empathy, the mirrors place viewers within the stained-glass scenes, allowing them to see themselves as the insect—the “other” and the “other” as sacred and precious. The installation suggests that all living beings carry the same inherent value we place on ourselves, regardless of how different they may appear.
